Leaked police photos from Xinjiang show victims of China’s persecution of Uyghurs

A trove of leaked police files and photos from Xinjiang in western China has revealed more details about China’s treatment of Uyghurs. More than 2,800 mugshots of detainees in what China terms its “reeducation camps” along with information including a shoot-to-kill policy for those who try to escape, were hacked and then leaked to an American-based researcher. Darren Byler, a specialist on China’s treatment of Uyghurs at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, has read the report and seen the photos. Marco Werman speaks to him about how this rare insider information furthers the story about China’s persecution of its Muslim minority.
