In January 2018, the Trump Administration instituted a policy known as “Last In, First Out,” by which more recent asylum applicants have their cases processed before those submitted years ago. The idea is to address a long backlog of asylum cases by quickly eliminating frivolous or fraudulent cases. But people who have already been waiting years to get asylum now face further uncertainty. Host Marco Werman speaks with journalist Leta Hallowell, who made an audio documentary about Alex Bukasa, a long-time asylum-seeker, and we hear Alex tell his story.
