Japan chooses ‘tax’ as Kanji of the year

The Japanese character for the word “taxes” has been chosen by the public as the best representation of the year 2023. Similar to “word of the year” in other languages, the “kanji of the year” tapped into the public’s anxiety about tax hikes and increasing prices of gas and everyday goods.
