Italian town up in arms over statue of first female PhD recipient

The World

Elena Piscopia was the first woman in history to get a PhD. Her graduation from the University of Padua in 1678 drew tens of thousands of curious onlookers. Today, she’s celebrated with a rather humble statue on the campus. But soon, she’ll take up residence in the town’s largest square, among statues of 78 other luminaries from the city. That is, unless her critics get their way.
