A united Ireland is within touching distance, the leader of the Irish Republican party Sinn Fein Mary-Lou McDonald said this week. Northern Ireland has been without a functioning government for almost two years. The Democratic Unionist party (DUP) boycotted the assembly over Brexit trade arrangements. This week, the party struck a new deal with the British government that should see the Northern Ireland assembly up and running again and for the first time, a Sinn Fein lawmaker will become the region’s first minister.
