Ireland marks anniversary of decriminalizing homosexuality

The World

Thirty years ago this month, Ireland decriminalized homosexuality. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, the first openly gay governor of the state, gave a speech in the Irish Senate yesterday marking the event. She noted that in 2015, Ireland became the first country in the world to introduce same-sex marriage through a national referendum. In 2017, it elected its first openly gay prime minister. It’s a remarkable transformation for a once-fiercely conservative Catholic country. The World’s Europe correspondent Orla Barry reports.
