Facebook has depended on a contracting company called Sama in Kenya to moderate banned and graphic content on their platform all over Africa. Sama paid these employees between $1.50 and $2.20 an hour. Many could barely cover the basic necessities with those wages. They also struggled with PTSD from viewing graphic videos and images for hours on end. Marco Werman speaks with Daniel Motaung, a worker for Sama who attempted to organize to negotiate better working conditions and was fired for it.
