How far will the US go to make a darling of Vietnam’s military?

The World

The US’ and Vietnam’s militaries have grown steadily closer. American warships now routinely come to Vietnam to train with Vietnamese forces and share tactics. It’s all part of a strategy to help Vietnam’s forces stand up to China — namely China’s attempted takeover of the South China Sea, the largest sea body on Earth. But how far will the US go in making a darling of Vietnam’s military? Ted Osius, US ambassador to Vietnam from 2014 to 2017, has some insights. He’s the author of the memoir, “Nothing is Impossible: America’s Reconciliation with Vietnam.”
