A planned nationwide protest in Cuba on Monday was quashed by police, state security agents and civilians who literally prevented demonstrators from leaving their homes. The civilians who took part in the repression are members of neighborhood watch groups known as the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), created by Fidel Castro after the 1959 revolution. Marco Werman speaks with Lillian Guerra, a professor of Cuban and Caribbean history and director of the Cuba program at the University of Florida.
