India was founded as a secular democracy. But more than six decades since the country’s constitution laid out protections for minorities, Hindu nationalists have increasingly gone on the attack. Many have become emboldened by right-wing Hindus who are in power. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has often refused to condemn acts of violence against minorities. In fact Hindu leaders have taken part in inciting violence. Jason Palmer, who hosts the Economist’s podcast The Intelligence, shares the magazine’s reporting.
