Grieving for her native Haiti through song

The World

Host Marco Werman introduces us to Haitian singer Moonlight Benjamin. As we hear, she has been influenced as much by “mizik rasin,” or Haitian roots music, as Alabama Shakes or Malian chanteuse Oumou Sangare. We hear Moonlight Benjamin’s single “Bafon” off her new album “Wayo.” It’s a metaphor, she says, about burying Haiti as if it’s a person.
