The long-time director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville has died. The ensemble, famous for the performance of spirituals, has toured the world for more than 150 years. Paul Kwami was the first director from Africa, and led the orchestra for almost 30 years. Colleen Phelps spoke with Kwami for a documentary last year, and has this remembrance of some of the highlights of his career, including a meaningful performance in Kwami’s home country of Ghana.
