Chef Hawa Hassan always wondered why African cuisine never seemed to go mainstream in the United States. Originally from Somalia, Hassan came to the US as a refugee and settled in Seattle. She’s started her own condiment company and has had a show on the Food Network. But more recently, Hassan has gotten attention for her cookbook “In Bibi’s Kitchen,” which features recipes handed down from grandmothers in East Africa. The World’s Halima Gikandi spoke with Hawa Hassan about what inspired her to put together the cookbook.
