When King Juan Carlos I took the Spanish throne in 1975, he brought with him the hopes of a return to democracy. This was after nearly four decades of dictatorship under Generalissimo Francisco Franco. But the king’s reign was riddled with scandals. On Monday, the former king disappeared into exile.
