First English translation of a Uyghur writer’s work

The World

The book, “The Backstreets: A Novel from Xinjiang,” was written by Perhat Tursun, a Uyghur writer who disappeared in 2018, and is now serving a 16-year prison sentence at an unknown prison in China. The book has just been published in English for the first time. One of the book’s translators, Darren Byler, is a Uyghur scholar and teacher at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. He discusses the book with The World’s host Carol Hills.
