Fiction keeps British-era ghosts alive in India’s hills

When the British ruled India, they often escaped to quaint Himalayan villages for a break from the blistering heat. And when they lost control of India in 1947 and left, it’s believed some of their spirits remained to haunt these towns. But, even as their colonial-era buildings slowly decay, the towns’ haunted legacies refuse to be exorcized, thanks to several generations of Indian authors who have made the spirits their muses. Sushmita Pathak takes a ghost tour in the town of Shimla, India, where some residents see the ghosts as a legacy of a colonial past, and others thrill in the paranormal possibilities.
