The earthquakes that killed more than 59,000 people in southern Turkey and northern Syria six months ago produced enough rubble to cover 40 square miles, according to estimates by the United Nations. That’s twice the size of Bermuda. Though the rubble contains asbestos, heavy metals and other toxic contaminants, it’s being dumped near tent cities and environmentally protected areas.
