Controversial elections in Algeria

Thursday’s elections in Algeria were supposed to calm a population that has been taking to the streets in protest since February. In April, the Hirak protest movement brought down Algeria’s longest serving president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika. But protesters say the candidates in today’s election are all linked to the Bouteflika regime and they want the whole military political system, which has dominated Algeria since independence in 1962, gone. Marco Werman speaks with Zine Labidine Ghebouli, a young Algerian scholar at the American University of Beirut who believes his country is at a turning point.
