Central Asia has some of the world’s worst air. Most major cities there burn large amounts of coal in the winter, and the air quality in Almaty, Kazakhstan, regularly reaches hazardous levels of air pollution. In 2017, Pavel Plotitsyn, a Kazakh programmer launched the first real-time air quality monitoring website in the country, AirKaz.org. Since then, Plotitsyn has set up a network of low-cost sensors in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, with plans to expand to Uzbekistan. He hopes his project will put pressure on governments to take action. Reporter Levi Bridges brings us his story.
