Carnival in Uruguay: A musical street theater competition

The World

Uruguay claims to have the world’s longest Carnival celebration. It goes on for 40 days or more, and it’s structured as an outdoors theater festival, with performances of a very distinct choral music called Murga. The World’s Tibisay Zea reports that Murga is an important form of social and political critique for Uruguayans that survived a brutal military dictatorship.
