Canadians from English-speaking regions will be charged more tuition to attend English-language universities in Quebec

The premier of Quebec, François Legault, has proposed tuition hikes for students from outside Quebec, in English-speaking regions, who come for an education at venerable English universities like McGill, Concordia and Bishop’s. McGill estimates that the plan will lead to a $94 million shortfall in the school’s budget. Premier Legault argues that the money should be used to fund French-speaking schools in Quebec to maintain the province’s cultural heritage. The World’s Carol Hills talks with Jacob Robbins-Kanter, an assistant professor in politics and international studies at Bishop’s who’s written about the issue.
