Ukrainian American pastor Alex Zaytsev returned to the eastern, front-line city of Avdiivka this week to bring much-needed humanitarian aid. Zaytsev served as a pastor in the city for six years before Russia’s full-scale invasion began last February. Zaytsev tells The World’s Marco Werman that many of Avdiivka’s residents live huddled in basements and are often deeply suspicious, even of one another.
