Friendship Park is a binational garden that sits across the US-Mexico border, in San Diego and Tijuana. Since it was built a little over 50 years ago, it’s become a place where families can meet and talk through small gaps in a tall, metal fence. Community leaders on either side of the border are worried the park, and the community around it, may be permanently destroyed if the Biden administration carries out former President Donald Trump’s plans to fortify the fence into a wall. Manolo Morales and Sarah Wyman of the podcast Atlas Obscura recently documented a regular Sunday church service in Friendship Park, where people gather on both sides of the border.
