Benin bronzes digitally reunited in database for the first time

The World

Over the span of a century, a horde of royal treasures from the pre-colonial West African kingdom of Benin was hauled away as war booty by British soldiers. The first complete catalog of the more than 5,000 artifacts, collectively known as the Benin Bronzes, and other related artifacts across the globe, has been compiled in a database by a museum in Hamburg, Germany. The World’s host Carol Hills spoke with Aiko Obobaifo, a historian in Benin City, Nigeria, who consulted on the project.
