Belgium is facing pressure to support sanctions on Russian diamonds

The European Union is working on a new round of sanctions to coincide with the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine. There’s pressure to include a ban on Russian diamonds, but Belgium plays a key role in the global diamond trade and its government is trying to push for a compromise: a system to trace and identify “blood diamonds.” Marco Werman speaks with Hans Merket, a researcher with the International Peace Information Service or IPIS in Belgium. His focus is the link between natural resources and conflict, development and human rights.
