Belarusians and scores of countries around the world have condemned the incumbent, Alexander Lukashenko, for rigging the election in his own favor. Since then, hundreds of thousands of protesters have come out to the streets. Belarusian authorities have responded with a heavy hand, thousands have been detained, and there have been detailed reports of torture and abuse.
