Every year, thousands of Catholic worshipers travel to Mexico City to watch a live reenactment of the stations of the cross. The Passion Play of the borough of Iztapalapa has long been a destination for worshipers asking God for atonement on one of the most important days of the year for Catholics. This year, as Mexico and much of the world implement social-distancing measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus, local authorities have decided to cancel the much-anticipated event. The World’s Jorge Valencia went to the spiritual and physical center of the story — where he interviewed Jesus and the Virgin Mary themselves.
