A reversal from Turkey on Sweden’s bid to join NATO

The World

After months of blocking Sweden’s efforts to join NATO, Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has now agreed to support Swedish membership with the Western military alliance. US President Joe Biden welcomed the news. “I stand ready to work with President Erdogan and Turkey on enhancing defense and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic area. I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Kristersson and Sweden as our 32nd NATO ally,” he said in a statement. The World’s Europe correspondent Orla Barry reports from Stockholm.
