Pakistani author and feminist critic Bina Shah has written a book inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale and the realities faced by women in the Middle East and South Asia. In her novel “Before She Sleeps”, Shah imagines a world where nuclear war and cancer have brought the ratio of men to women to extremeley low levels, and women are forced to have multiple husbands in order to have children as quickly as possible.
