VP stands for Vincent and Patricia Chin, the children of Chinese immigrants via Jamaica. Vincent and Patricia founded Randy’s Record Mart in Kingston before moving to New York in the ‘70s. The business has been kept up by their son, Chris Chin. As head of VP Records today, Chris continues to be in that world, even as reggae shifts to dancehall rhythms. A new box set celebrates VP Records’ 40 years in business. Marco Werman speaks to Chris Chin.
