The Tavis Smiley Show pays tribute to Prince, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 57 on April 21. Born Prince Rogers Nelson, he burst onto the music scene in the 1970’s. He had many top ten hits for himself, and other artists, including Chaka Khan and Sinead O’Connor. During his over 35 year-long career, he won multiple Grammy’s and an Oscar for his work on Purple Rain. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

The world’s reaction to his death was immediate and sizeable; notable figures shared their messages of grief. International landmarks, like Niagra Falls and the Eiffel Tower in France were lit purple to honor the legendary musician’s life and work. In our hour-long tribute, we replay two interviews with Prince. He talks to Tavis Smiley about his performance with Beyonce at the 2004 Grammy Awards, his childhood, his relationship to the music industry, his philosophy on friendship, thoughts on politics and more.
