The Dutch farmer’s party was formed in protest. It just won big.

A stunning result in Dutch politics on Thursday as a farmers’ party is set to be the most represented in the upper house of Parliament. The group, known as the Farmer-Citizen Movement, started in 2019 in response to widespread protests by farmers reacting to environmental regulations they believed were harmful to their businesses. The party has come to represent a lot more in the intervening years, says political scientist Sarah de Lange at the University of Amsterdam. She speaks to The World’s Marco Werman from her home in Amsterdam.
