The multinational oil company Shell will pay around $16 million to four Nigerian farmers and their communities in compensation for pollution from leaking oil pipelines. The settlement was agreed to after more than a decade of lawsuits and legal battles. It follows a decision handed down in a British court last year that Shell is responsible for damages caused by its branch in Nigeria.
