LGBTQ rights advocates have heavily criticized FIFA for giving the 2022 Men’s World Cup to Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal and punishable with prison time. Both FIFA and Qatari officials have said “everyone is welcome” at the tournament, but messaging is inconsistent.
