Italy’s presidential election went to seven rounds of voting and saw more than a dozen candidates nominated. None of that is strange for Italy — but the reelection of Sergio Mattarella, the incumbent president, is. He’s only the second person in history to be reelected to the role — and it was a selection of last resort.
