ExxonMobil announced a plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions from its operations to “net zero” by midcentury. But that target does not include its main source of emissions: those released when customers burn their oil or gas. It’s seen as incremental progress, but a sign that investors, who’ve long pushed Exxon to start reducing its carbon footprint, are changing the company’s strategy.
