Japan expands its military capabilities

Japan has started to beef up its ability to counter threats from countries such as China. In 2016, it began to open outposts on an island chain in the East China Sea. As they have expanded, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces (SDF) have ramped up their weapons and training. The Economist’s Noah Sneider hopped several flights to visit the country’s most remote bases to see just how much Japan’s military capabilities have grown.
