The coronavirus has captured the world’s attention, for good reason, but it doesn’t circulate in a vacuum. The new variant of concern, omicron, was first identified by scientists in a part of the world with some of the highest rates of HIV. For many in public health, the variant’s emergence, regardless of how it came to be, has been an important reminder that the world can’t fully address one pandemic without addressing other ones.
