South Africa launches vaccines campaign after delay

There were cheers and applause on Wednesday in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the country’s first coronavirus vaccines were administered. South Africa’s national rollout began after a complicated and disappointing start. The country received over a million units of the AstraZeneca vaccine at the beginning of February. But then new research showed that the AstraZeneca shot has limited efficacy against the predominant coronavirus variant in South Africa.
