The Takeaway

Coming up on today’s show:

  • On Monday, a hearing began in San Antonio, Texas to determine the constitutionality of SB4, a law that requires local police to comply with federal requests made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), like asking people about their immigration status in routine stops. Stephen Vladeck, a professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law and co-editor of Just Security, outlines the details of the case.
  • Rolando Meza Espinoza was detained by ICE on Long Island back in March. The detention was a case of mistaken identity, but while awaiting his release, Meza’s health deteriorated and he died on June 10. He is the 10th individual to die in ICE custody since October. Betsy Plum, vice president of policy at the New York Immigration Coalition, looks at what went wrong.
  • Yesterday, a cyberattack that originated in the Ukraine quickly spread across Russia and Europe, and a few cases of disruption appeared in the U.S. Analysts say the virus works similarly to the WannaCry ransomware that attacked 230,000 computers around the world last month. Who is behind this attack? Siobhan Gorman, director at the Brunswick Group focusing on cybersecurity and privacy, offers her take.
  • Earlier this week, Brazilian President Michel Temer became the first sitting president in almost three decades to face criminal charges. He is accused of accepting bribes, but the nation’s Congress would have to approve a motion towards a trial with a two thirds majority vote. Dom Phillips, a reporter for The New York Times and The Guardian, explains what you need to know.
  • On Tuesday, three police officers were indicted on felony charges for conspiring to cover up the actions of the officer who shot and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in October of 2014. We look back at the case, and how a trial might move forward, with Sheila Bedi, a professor at the Northwestern School of Law, and an attorney with the Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center.
  • Today, the podcast Death, Sex & Money launches the first part of a two-part episode on student loans. Some 44 million Americans have student loan debt, totaling $1.3 trillion. Anna Sale, host of the podcast, talks to listeners about their struggles with student loan debt, from the isolation they feel to the degrees they regret.
  • Drew Holcomb, a vocalist and guitar player for Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors, has been producing music from East Nashville, Tennessee for more than a decade. His new album, “Souvenir,” is out this year. He joins The Takeaway to discuss his latest record and his creative process.

This episode is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
