Understanding the EU, Television’s Most Devastating Cancellations, Life’s Soundtrack

The Takeaway

Coming up on today’s show:

  • Britain’s tumultuous week began when the nation voted to leave the EU, and shows no sign of ending as Boris Johnson, the former mayor of London who helped lead the “Leave” campaign, pulled of the running to lead the Conservative Party. David O’Sullivan, the ambassador for the EU to the United States, says the anger toward the EU is fundamentally misplaced.
  • Indiana is one of the top states for meth lab seizures, in part because small batches of methamphetamine are made with easily accessible over-the-counter ingredients. Harry Webb, a pharmacy owner, and other community leaders in Fulton County, Indiana, have pushed for a law that would require pharmacists’ approval of pseudoephedrine sales. It becomes state law this month.
  • HBO announced last week the cancellation of “Vinyl,” a big-budget drama with Martin Scorcese and Mick Jagger on board that only lasted one season. Our culture reporter Melissa Locker tells us about what drives quick cancellations (even on HBO) and whether this trend will continue to more of our favorite shows. Also, let’s talk about some of the most devastating cancellations.
  • It’s Friday, so we welcome back Newsday’s Rafer Guzman to talk about this weekend’s movie releases. This week, he discusses “Our Kind of Traitor,” “The Legend of Tarzan” and “The Purge: Election Year.”
  • If our pets could talk, what stories and insights could they impart on humans and the humans who rely on them for emotional support? In the new film “Wiener-Dog,” directed by Todd Solondz, a little dachshund is the companion to four very different and very flawed people.
  • What is the mix tape to your life? Dave Holmes, a former MTV VJ, has written a memoir called “Party of One: A Memoir in 21 Songs” that illustrates hits and deep cuts that made the soundtrack to his life during several attempts to try and fit in.
